Karsten is a photographer and scientist based in Switzerland and in the San Francisco Bay Area. With his images he strives to highlight the beauty of nature and and to evoke emotions similar to the ones that he experiences when being outdoors. His photography is influenced by mimimal art, design and architecture, and he believes that less is more. One of his favorite artists is the American-Canadian abstract expressionist Agnes Martin who he got to know in Taos, NM. Agnes wrote: “When I think of art I think of beauty. Beauty is the mystery of life. It is not in the eye it is in the mind.”

Most images on this site are acquired with Hasselblad medium format digital cameras. If necessary, Karsten takes advantage of the digital medium to improve the quality of the final image. For example, he sometimes combines multiple exposures to enhance the resolution, or to increase the dynamic range or depth of field.
